This folder contains a special Demo version of Mangia!, the Cook's Best Friend for the Macintosh. The "Mangia! 1.1 Demo" application is not a self-running presentation or a "crippled" version of the real thing, but rather is identical to the for-sale version, except that 1) the startup screen is much uglier, and 2) the program will only operate for two months, gracefully expiring at the end of that time with a polite suggestion to order the eternal version. This demo folder also includes only a fraction (1/8, to be approximate) of the number of recipes that accompany the shipping version.
Mangia! will run on any Macintosh with at least a Megabyte of memory (Mac Plus and up) and 2 Megabytes on a hard drive. It does require System 6.0.5 or greater, and it is fully compatible with System 7. As installed, it asks for 768KBytes to start up, but it will accept as little as 530K, which should be sufficient on small-screen, black-and-white Macs (Plus, SE, Classic). While Mangia! will run in a small amount of memory, you will notice that it runs significantly faster if you can spare it more.
To start the demo, simply double-click the Mangia! 1.1 Demo icon in the Mangia! Demo ƒ folder. While Mangia! itself includes an excellent 150-page manual, you should be able to make good use of the demo by simply trying things out. Here are some helpful hints to get you started:
• Double-clicking on the name of a recipe opens the recipe for inspection.
• The Tools menu lists the four main windows in Mangia!. You can send selected recipes to the Recipe Clipboard and the Shopping List by clicking the "paper clip" and "shopping cart" buttons at the bottom right of the appropriate windows. Double clicking the buttons brings up the Clipboard or the Shopping List.
• The Recipe Browser shows recipes from files you check off in a list that you see when you click on the “Pick Cookbooks” button (there’s only one file in the demo version).
• To organize recipes in the Recipe Browser by different categorizations, choose from the popup menu located just below the Browser's list of recipes (when you start the demo, it will say "Course Dividers."
• To search for specific kinds of recipes in the Recipe Browser, click on the Match What button at the top right. Holding down the Option key when clicking will bring up the Full Finder with many more choices.
• To enter a new recipe, choose New Recipe from the Recipes menu, or hit the New Recipe button found in several windows. Mangia! will ask you to name the recipe, and then step you through entering each part of the recipe in turn. However, remember that the title is the only part you MUST specify.
